Dear Dr Podisi,
Dear CCARDESA community,

The 20th UN World Milk Day celebration is coming soon, June 1 (see full message below).

As we battle with COVID-19, this is also an opportunity to use this global campaign to celebrate and showcase the work of the African dairy industry. This year marks the 20th annual celebration and the African footprint is not significant enough. As in the notice below, the celebrations will start with Enjoy Dairy Rally May 29-31, culminating with World Milk Day on Monday, June 1.

We have comparative advantage to tell evidence based story: As the agricultural research community we have a comparative advantage to tell evidence-based stories of Role of the Southern African Dairy Industry in responsible and sustainable Food System. And help raise the African story of the dairy industry.

At CCARDESA level: In the same way as you facilitate discussions on topical issues, I think it will be opportune to start another conversation aiming at celebrating best practices of the Dairy farmers, Dairy industry and the entire value chain, and the role of research. The conversation could respond to:
How the Africa dairy industry is contributing to food security, livelihoods, job creation?
What are the creative ways that the dairy industry is doing to adapt to and mitigate against climate change and environmental impacts?
How is the Dairy industry contributing to sustainable food system?
How researchers can better support the dairy industry towards responsible and sustainable food systems?
You could create key messages emanating from this conversation and post through CCARDESA social media channels during these 4 days of celebration and use necessary hashtags (see below) .

At CCARDESA research Community individual level: As researchers in this group, we also have a role to play.

Positive Research outputs: Do we have researchers who have done research in the dairy industry and the value chain. Do you have any positive results worth sharing? Do you have an evidence based story to tell? This is the opportunity to leverage on this global campaign to share those key messages through your social media platform on those days and contribute to the celebration.

Do you have a dairy experimental farm: This is an opportunity to profile it, ad tell and share your story. Take pictures, generate an infographic, etc.

Do you know a dairy farmer? I am sure we all know a dairy farmer somewhere or we work with and support the dairy value chain and the industry. We know of dairy farmers or actors in the value chain that are innovating and making it against all odds. This offers a great opportunity for us to celebrate them, profile them and tell their best practice stories. You can also share this information with them and let them them share their own stories like many farmers from across the globe.

Consumer education: We can use this opportunity to educate others about the contribution of the dairy industry. We can write blogs or stories about the dairy contributions to Nutrition, livelihoods, job creation, school feeding programmes etc. For credibility of the stories, It is important to base these on facts and science. Which we do best as scientists. The Global Dairy Platform has published an an overview of the industry’s role in responsible and sustainable food system <https://globaldairyplatform.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/gdp-responsi…;. You can either use these key messages, or supplement them with your own key messages as it relates to your individual country.

Do children in your urban areas even know where the milk come from? Do they know what else milk can do (other products)? This offers an opportunity to tell the story and educate others.

We enjoy dairy: Some of us (and our kids) enjoy milk, cheese and other dairy products. We drink it, use it when we cook etc. So there are many ways to celebrate this important industry.

Do you know others who can participate?
Does your university have a dairy farm? Do your local schools have feeding scheme/programmes? Let us share this message as wide as possible to our individual networks, so we raise the Southern African footprint in the global celebration of the 20th World Milk Day.

For all these ideas to count as part of the global celebration you need to register it. I will be happy to see all Southern African countries registering at least one event. I just did for my country South Africa and it was that easy.
Who else is coming on board? What will your idea/event be?.

See below the official communication providing details on how to register your idea/event. How to download other promotional material and tips of what else could be done.

Best regards
