Abstract

The Agricultural Climate Resilience Enhancement Initiative (ACREI) is a partnership program among the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), funded by the Adaptation Fund.

The goal of the initiative is to develop and implement adaptation strategies and measures that will strengthen the resilience of vulnerable smallholder farmers, agro-pastoralists and pastoralists in the Horn of Africa to climate variability and change, with focus on Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia. The intervention has three key pillars of work 1) climate informed adaptation practice at community level, 2) climate proofing of extension services and 3) climate informed decision making and downscaling of climate information.

Program interventions include downscaling of climate information, participatory planning and development of community adaptation action plans, Climate enhanced Farmer Field Schools, Financing of community adaptation interventions, Participatory Scenario Planning (PSP) at district levels and more. In all activities ministries of agriculture in the countries work hand in hand with meteorological departments to ensure the information and advisories apply to and reach those who need it most.
