Back in the mid 2000’s the great debate raged in Southern Africa over whether Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) was the best technology for rearing tilapia in Southern Africa over pond-culture. This webinar will give practical experience from Chobe Bream in northern Botswana on the use of large tunnel-based RAS vs use of earthen ponds for breeding and rearing Oreochromis andersonii.

Small-scale farmers are faced with a myriad of challenges ranging from difficulty in accessing quality seed and feed and poor access to markets. Fragmented small-scale production has made the acquisition and management of challenges difficult, hence the need for models like those that link smallholder aquaculture production clusters with a community-based coordination and support framework. This webinar will highlight practical experiences from the implementation of an Inclusive Aquaculture Private-Community Value Chain Development Model in the Western Uganda Great Lakes. It will also give an account of the adaptability and replicability of the concept for other countries.
