Overview: Released in August 2019, the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land was produced by 107 experts from 52 countries to explore the interlinkage between climate change and land usage. The report covered a range of issues including desertification, land degradation, sustainable land management, food security, and greenhouse gas fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems and, in this presentation, Professor Pete Smith – one of the convening lead authors – delves into the report’s findings and their relevance to Africa.
Speaker biography: Pete Smith is Professor of Soils and Global Change at the Institute of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Aberdeen (Scotland, UK) and Science Director of the Scottish Climate Change Centre of Expertise (ClimateXChange).
He has served in various roles for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). His main interests are in climate change mitigation and impacts, soils, agriculture, bioenergy, food security, greenhouse gases, ecosystem services and ecosystem modelling. He is a former member of Defra’s Science Advisory Council, and a current member of DfID’s Science Advisory Group and the Global Food Security Science Advisory Board and has been an advisor to the Committee on Climate Change.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, a Fellow of the Institute of Soil Scientists, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a Foreign Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, a Fellow of the European Science Academy, and a Fellow of the Royal Society (London).
He has published >450 peer-reviewed journal papers with total citations of >26700 and has an H-index (WoK) of 86 (114 on GS). He has been a Highly Cited Researcher each year since 2015.
