Abstract
Agroforestry systems in Africa constitute the third largest carbon sink after primary forests and long term fallows. In Africa, a total of 1 550 million ha are suitable for some type of agroforestry with high climate change mitigation potential.
Agroforestry value chains in Africa extend over a wide range of countries and cover million hectares with relatively intense tree coverage. They are often facing challenges of wide scale restoration, rehabilitation, or application of SLM or CSA practices. Such upgrading scenarios are either on-going or in planning process. Cocoa, cashew rehabilitation or shea parkland restoration constitute upscaling paths with high carbon-fixing performances associated with wide pro-poor social impact. Carbon performances translate in high carbon balance fixed per year, negative carbon foot print per ton of commodity produced and low cost per ton of CO2 fixed (0.8 – 1 US$ per ton for cocoa and shea value chains)

The on-going RAF appraisal work on agroforestry value chains is a FAO path towards formulation / upscaling of agroforestry value chain support programs/ policies with combined social, economic and high climate mitigation impact with partners as ADB, World Bank, IFAD,GEF, GCF.
